Dr. Joey Cadena, DPT, FAAOMPT, FMD

Education
Dr. Joey Cadena is the Owner, CEO, and Lead Therapist at PhysioSports Institute. In 1996, he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Fine Arts from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He earned a Master's of Science in Physical Therapy in 2008 from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. In 2012, he completed his fellowship training in Austin through the Manual Therapy Institute, a fellowship program of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Dr. Joey went on to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in 2014. In 2024, Dr. Joey  earned his certification as a Functional Medicine Doctor from Wisdom Institute of Medicine.

Experience & Entrepreneurship

Dr. Joey has been a Personal Fitness Trainer and Martial Arts Instructor since 1993. He has owned and operated a number of martial arts schools in South Texas along with a training facility, Rock Solid Total Fitness, in Falfurrias, Texas. In 2013, Dr. Joey opened PhysioSports Therapy located in McAllen, Texas. Over the past 16 years, he has successfully treated patients in the RGV ranging from geriatric to semi-professional sports athletes. In January of 2018, Dr. Joey announced the expansion of PhysioSports by incorporating strength and conditioning coaching as part of his physical therapy clinic and renamed it PhysioSports Institute. In 2022, PhysioSports Institute relocated to Edinburg, Texas and has now expanded to include functional and longevity medicine, nutrition coaching, and massage therapy.

 

Awards & Recognition
In 2015, 2016, and 2017, Dr. Joey was awarded the McAllen Monitor's Reader’s Choice Award for Favorite Physical Therapist. In 2016, Spartan Race selected him as a Spartan Race Ambassador because of his dedication and contribution to the sport. In addition, Dr. Joey holds a 8th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and a brown belt in Japanese Iaido, is a certified instructor in Filipino Kali, and has over 30 years of experience in the martial arts. Dr. Joey is currently studying Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Community

Dr. Joey is always willing to give back to the community. He often lectures at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley on biomechanics, injury prevention, and exercise science, and provides opportunities for students to complete their internships at his clinic. Dr. Joey has also served as a guest speaker at several commencement ceremonies and sports banquets. In 2017 and 2018, Dr. Joey and his wife, Dr. Sandra, teamed up with Emily's Meals to provide meals to the homeless community in the RGV. They both value education, and have awarded a number of scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the medical field.
